Passage of Natural Gas Tax Lowers CNG Price

Clearwater, FLA. -- Effective Jan. 1, 2016, Clearwater Gas System will lower the price of compressed natural gas, or CNG, from $1.47 to $1.17 per gas gallon equivalent (GGE) at the Clearwater public fueling station.

The lower rate is a direct result of the passage of legislation by the House of Representatives and the Senate to extend Federal excise tax credits through Dec. 31, 2016. The new passage also corrects a long-standing inequity in the way liquefied natural gas (LNG) and propane gas are taxed and will further expand the use of clean-burning domestic natural gas as a transportation fuel.

Clearwater Gas System's public CNG station is the fueling base for several local fleets such as Waste Pro, Verizon, Clearwater's Solid Waste, Gas and Parks and Recreation departments, and Jolley Trolley. The number of publicly accessible compressed natural gas refueling stations has grown by about a third nationwide since 2012, to 664 stations, according to data from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Clearwater Gas System sells approximately 350,000 GGEs per year of compressed natural gas, to its city fleet and outside customers. As compressed natural gas continues to gain momentum, Clearwater Gas System will continue to target local vehicle fleets, fuel providers, community leaders and industry stakeholders to help reduce petroleum use in transportation.
