The Issuance of the Commemorative Coin Set
for the Chinese Zodiac Year of the Snake

The Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) will issue a commemorative coin set for 2013, the Chinese Zodiac Year of the Snake on January 17, 2013. Each set consists of one silver coin weighing an ounce as well as two proof coins in different denominations. The silver coin has a face value of NT$100, and the two proof coins NT$50 and NT$20, respectively.

The Central Bank has delegated the Bank of Taiwan to sell the coin sets to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. A total of 120,000 coin sets will be issued, limited to one set per purchaser at a time. Each coin set costs NT$1,800.

The obverse face of the silver coin shows the image of a snake. The outstanding characteristics of snakes are their remarkable agility, adaptive faculties, and ability to survive. Because the snake comes immediately after the dragon in the Chinese Zodiac order and its contour is similar to that of the dragon, it is often called the "little dragon." The reverse side features an image of Hengchun Ancient City, located at the center of Hengchun Township, Pingtung County, Taiwan. Built in 1875, the first year of the Guangxu Emperor of Qing Dynasty,it is classified as a National Historic Site and is one of the ancient cities of Taiwan that have remained relatively intact.
