The Senate last night passed by unanimous consent AHA-supported legislation that would extend the Rural Community Hospital Demonstration for five years for hospitals participating in the program as of Dec. 30, 2014. The RCH Demonstration Extension Act (S. 607), which now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration, also would require the Health and Human Services Secretary to report to Congress on the program's effectiveness by August 2018. Currently, 23 hospitals participate in the program, which enables rural hospitals with 50 or fewer acute-care beds to test the feasibility of cost-based reimbursement.
