Prior to joining Evercore, he was a Vice President in the Transportation and Infrastructure group at Bank of America Merrill Lynch and prior to the merger, Mr. Whatley spent five years in the Gaming, Leisure & Transportation group at Merrill Lynch.
During his time at Merrill Lynch, Mr. Whatley advised on a number of important transactions including the merger/IPO/Chapter 11 re-emergence of America West Airlines and US Airways, the full recapitalization of AMERCO (U-Haul) post Chapter 11, the recapitalization and sale of Chembulk Tankers, Merrill Lynch Private Equity’s acquisition of NPC International, and the restructuring and recapitalization of DryShips Inc. Mr. Whatley also advised on a number of other significant transactions for clients including Allegiant Travel, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, LAN, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Norfolk Southern, Danaos Corp, Seaspan Corp, Double Hull Tankers, Navios Maritime, Ship Finance, Teekay Corp and Overseas Shipholding Group.
At Evercore, notable transactions Mr. Whatley has been involved with include the $3.0 billion restructuring of Danaos Corp., the successful tender offer and acquisition of OSG America L.P.
by Overseas Shipholding Group, the sale of Cardiff’s 25% ownership of Primelead Shareholders Inc. to DryShips Inc., the restructuring of Overseas Shipholding Group’s $1.0 billion contractual relationship with Aker Philadelphia Shipyard and American Shipping Company, multiple asset sales from Capital Maritime to Capital Product Partners L.P., and the successful equity recapitalization and sale of 50% of Mexican airline Volaris.
