Retail sales in Germany increased in August thanks to the easing of coronavirus-related lockdown restrictions.

Retail sales increased by a price-adjusted 1.1% on month in August, data from the country's statistics agency Destatis showed Friday. This follows a revised 4.5% fall in July.

On year, German retail sales rose 0.4% in August in real terms, the data showed.

Compared with February 2020, the month before restrictions were first imposed in Germany, retail sales were up by 6.0% in August, Destatis said.

Sales of food, drinks and tobacco fell 3.4% in calendar and seasonally-adjusted terms in August compared with July, while sales of nonfood products increased 4.9% on month.
