French Riots Test Macron's Loyalty to Police

PARIS-French President Emmanuel Macron doesn't like taking sides. At home, his political mantra has long been "neither right, nor left." And whenever he is pressed to weigh in on a hot-button issue, the leader will often deploy his favorite turn of phrase: "on the other hand."

But Macron swiftly shed his signature equanimity when video surfaced of a police officer shooting and killing 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk during a traffic stop in a Paris suburb, setting off nearly a week of riots.

Ukrainians Fight Back as Russia Seeks to Appropriate Their Country's History

KYIV, Ukraine-Serhiy Telizhenko is combating Russia's invasion from his office on a top floor of Ukraine's Institute of Archaeology amid ancient pot shards and human bones.

He is online, checking Russian social media and satellite photos for clues as to what has happened with the collections of historical artifacts, from swords and pistols to coins and jewelry, from museums in eastern Ukraine that have been destroyed or looted by Russian occupying forces.

Meta Platforms plans to release a microblogging app called Threads, a new product that is expected to hit the market Thursday, days after Twitter owner Elon Musk announced new strictures that will limit how many posts users see on that platform.

Social-media veterans and analysts see the planned app as a formidable competitor for Twitter, which has faced falling revenue and other challenges since Musk took over the company in October.

Tesla Gears Up for Battle With Gasoline Cars

Head-to-head competition with Tesla is a bullet that old-school automakers are still largely dodging in the U.S., but it is only a matter of time before they get hit.

The electric-vehicle pioneer said Sunday that it delivered 466,140 Teslas in the second quarter, a record and around 24,000 more than analysts polled by FactSet forecast. The stock was up about 5% premarket as investors saw a sign that Chief Executive Elon Musk's price cuts earlier this year are bearing fruit.
