Virgin Australia and Surf Life Saving have joined forces to raise awareness of the importance of surf safety for both international and domestic tourists on our beaches, following a number of drowning tragedies in Australian beaches and pools this season.

On average, over 12,000 rescues are performed by 44,323 dedicated, volunteer surf lifesavers each summer. Over 60,000 Nippers are taught vital surf safety skills and will grow into the next generation of surf lifesavers. Educating tourists and children in essential water safety plays a vital role in preventing drownings across our beaches and backyard pools.

Surf Life Saving Australia's CEO Brett Williamson OAM, said it is imperative the beachgoing public heed surf safety messages. "Our volunteer surf lifesavers give up their time to ensure the safety of people on our beaches. If they can't see you, they can't save you so we need to ensure that everyone travelling to a beach remembers to always swim between the red and yellow flags."

"We're extremely glad that Virgin Australia is able to assist us in getting that message out there. International tourists especially are often not prepared for the conditions at Australian beaches. We need to make them aware of the various hazards at the beach and what to do if they get in trouble", Mr Williamson said.

Virgin Australia Group Executive of Commercial, Liz Savage, said "Virgin Australia carries over 18 million guests a year and we believe we have an important role to play in promoting surf safety to this wide and diverse audience. International and domestic tourists will learn about surf safety through our in-flight entertainment system, Voyeur magazine and key advertising spots throughout some airports, educating our travellers before they hit the beaches"

"We are proud to become the official airline of Surf Life Saving Australia, and in order to prevent further drownings and save more lives, it is imperative for the surf safety messages to be seen and heard." Ms Savage said.
