Toyo Seikan Co. Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Toyo Seikan"), a consolidated subsidiary of Toyo Seikan Group Holdings Ltd., has commenced production of aluminum beverage cans using the Compression Bottom Reform (CBR) technology, which reforms and strengthens the bottom of beverage cans to reduce weight, at Chitose Plant in Hokkaido, Japan.

CBR won the Gold Award in the Prototype category of the Cans of the Year Awards 2020 sponsored by The Canmaker Magazine, and this is the first commercialization of CBR. By using CBR, the weight of the can is reduced from the current 11.5g to 10.9g, and CO2 emissions per can are reduced by approximately 3% from the current can.

If all aluminum beverage can product lines to which CBR are considered applicable were to adopt its technology, CO2 emissions would be reduced by approximately 40,000 tons*.

  • *Calculated based on Toyo Seikan's FY2020 production of aluminum beverage cans to which CBR are applicable and the amount of CO2 reduction per can using CBR.
