We had been on the trail of Paul Gascoigne from the day his precocious talents had been displayed at White Hart Lane early in his Newcastle United career.

So who better to take a closer look at Gazza than Bill Nicholson, whose instant recommendation was that we should pay whatever price the Magpies demanded.

Newcastle were playing at Upton Park in December, 1987, and Bill, by now a consultant, decided to make the short trip himself to see if the youngster's ability actually matched his growing reputation.

To say that Bill was blown away by Gazza is an understatement! And the January issue of Hotspur magazine features Nicholson's actual scouting report in which he insists: "He just has to be recommended."

Bill's brief is a fascinating piece of reading for any Spurs fan.

In it he praises Paul's skill, vision and self belief, adding: "I can't think of anyone else with similar ability."

But he also warned about Gascoigne's self discipline, pointing out: "His temperament is open to question." Gazza was booked in the game and Bill added: "He was very reckless in the tackle that got him the caution."

Read Bill's full report in the latest issue of our popular monthly magazine - on sale today in newsagents and at Saturday's game.
