SACRAMENTO, Calif., June 28, 2018 -- McClatchy (NYSE American: MNI) promoted longtime journalist Joe Tarica to Editor of The Tribune in San Luis Obispo, California. Most recently as senior editor, Tarica celebrated 25 years with The Tribune in January. As Editor he will oversee The Tribune and SanLuisObispo.com.

'We're thrilled to have Joe's continued journalistic leadership,' said The Tribune's Publisher, Ken Riddick. 'His deep understanding of the community and his experience means Tribune readers will receive sharp coverage of relevant issues.'

Tarica began his career at The Tribune in 1991 as an intern while he was a student at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. After graduating with a double major in journalism and English, Tarica was hired full-time as a copy editor in 1993. In his 25 years with The Tribune, he has won numerous awards ranging from Scripps Howard's company wide annual award for best headline writing, three California News Publishers Association awards for column writing and more than 25 Society for News Design awards as the presentation editor overseeing the production of the newspaper.

Tarica has overseen a newsroom that's recently covered significant stories in San Luis Obispo, including the jail death of Andrew Holland and ensuing surveillance video which shows a deputy laughing as CPR is performed. The Tribune's reporting pushed for accountability, showing readers how many deaths are occurring in the county jail (far more than the state average) and through open records requests demonstrated inconsistencies in communication about Holland's death.

'Joe understood the significance of the video that was given to The Tribune and with reporters and videographers worked thoughtfully through the reporting process,' said Lauren Gustus, West Region Editor for McClatchy which includes five news organizations in California, including The Tribune.

Tarica succeeds Sandy Duerr, who retired in late 2017.

'Joe is a talented, versatile, dependable editor whose multi-faceted expertise has made a difference through the years in The Tribune's newsroom - and to readers,' Duerr said. 'He was a strong partner for me as we led the team through tumultuous change and sought to broaden the newsroom's reach and impact. Furthermore, like others in the newsroom, he strives to make a difference in the community by tackling issues that matter to local residents.'

Tarica was named senior editor of The Tribune in 2013, overseeing the reporting staff at that time. In 25 years he has worked in every capacity in the newsroom, including copy editing, page design, graphics, assigning editing, reporting, photo editing, and video. A 30-year resident of San Luis Obispo County, Tarica currently lives in Atascadero with his wife, Stephanie, and their two teenage children.
