About 60 million people across Ethiopia lack access to clean and safe water. Water is especially limited in rural Ethiopia, where 80% of the population resides, and is typically unsafe whenever it is available.
In late 2019, IPG partnered with charity: water to fund a piped water system in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia as part of IPG's ongoing commitment to UN Sustainable Development Goal #6. Spring protection systems are integral in limiting insect and waterborne diseases from freshwater springs. The systems capture clean water as it emerges from the ground and channels it to community tap stands, allowing the communities to safely drink from naturally occurring springs.
The construction began in 2020, and was one of the first that charity: water and the project's local partner, Organization for Relief and Development in Amhara (ORDA), navigated through the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to bringing clean drinking water to 100 people in the region, the project introduced sanitation and hygiene training that was particularly crucial given the global pandemic.
Access to clean water is a basic human right that promotes health, education, growth, and gender equality. For more information on the water crisis, read here.
