Ushering in Mid-Autumn Festival, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) collaborated with Christian Family Service Centre to host the 'Mooncakes for the Community' programme on 18 September, during which they visited elderly singletons and underprivileged families at the Lei Yue Mun squatter area to share the warmth and festive greetings.

The Towngas Volunteer Service Team was joined by members of the family beneficiaries of the 'Love on Delivery' programme organised by Towngas previously, who took on the role of volunteers to help others in need. The precarious epidemic situation earlier hindered contact between people and among the community. Numerous underprivileged families have suffered additional pressure on their finances and their physical and mental health from difficulties arising from COVID-19. In response, Towngas launched the 'Love on Delivery' programme to donate fresh food packs to over 1,800 families in need to cater for their daily needs and directly reduce their food costs. With the epidemic slowing and Mid-Autumn Festival approaching, the Towngas Volunteer Service Team celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Company's 'Mooncakes for the Community' initiative by engaging social service organisations to invite members of underprivileged families to join them as volunteers.

On the one hand, the team hopes to encourage the parents to bring their children out of their homes and into the community as the epidemic dies down to resume their social life and share in the joy of helping others; on the other hand, the activity serves to care for more people in need, thereby instilling positivity into the community. Mr Peter Wong Wai-yee, Towngas Deputy Managing Director, took time out of his busy schedule to join in the visit to residents of the squatter area, caring for the elderly and presenting them with gifts. Mr Wong remarked, 'No matter how busy I am, I can't miss such a meaningful activity.' He also pointed out that Towngas will host more similar events as part of its corporate social responsibility efforts.

Under the post-epidemic 'new normal', the Company will continue to drive collaboration between the social welfare and commercial sectors to help more people in need. Towngas began organising the 'Mooncakes for the Community' event in 2001, promoting the message of care and inclusion through the gift of mooncakes. This year, about 140,000 mooncakes were passed out, among a cumulative total of over 2.7 million presented to people in need throughout the past two decades.

On 11 September, Towngas also collaborated with Hong Kong Housing Society to host a series of creative retro festivities at Kwon Lung Lau in Kennedy Town, including game booths and singing performances, to usher in Mid-Autumn Festival with seniors and their carers

The two Mid-Autumn-themed social welfare initiatives underscore Towngas' continued care for society in a bid to uphold its corporate social responsibility in spite of the epidemic. While the virus may have put social distance amongst people, love and care cannot be severed.
