SHI Receives its First Selection as a 'CDP 2023 Supplier Engagement Leader'

Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (SHI; Head Office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President and CEO: Shinji Shimomura; hereinafter 'SHI') was selected as a 'Supplier Engagement Leader' 1 by CDP, 2 an international environmental non-profit organization that promotes disclosure of climate change information, in its annual Supplier Engagement Rating.
Supplier Engagement Leader is the Rating's highest rank.
The Rating evaluates how effectively companies work with their suppliers on climate change issues. It selects those companies rated highest as Supplier Engagement Leaders.
Approximately 450 companies (including 109 Japanese enterprises) were selected as Supplier Engagement Leaders in CDP 2023. For the first time, SHI was included among them. It should be noted that SHI also received 'A-' ratings in the CDP 2023 areas of 'climate change' and 'water security.'
SHI will continue working to contribute realize a decarbonized society by addressing climate change throughout its supply chain.
CDP aims to boost supplier and corporate engagement and accelerate action on emissions in the global supply chain by establishing a system for assessing supplier engagement initiatives and recognizing best practices.
CDP is a UK-based international non-governmental organization that collects and analyzes information on corporate and urban environmental initiatives and discloses the results. Today, CDP motivates companies to identify their environmental impacts, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve water resources, and protect forests in collaboration with more than 680 investors with over USD 130 trillion in assets.
Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. specializes in the design, manufacturing and marketing of industrial and construction equipment. Net sales break down by family of products as follows:
- construction equipment (29.3%): hydraulic excavators, cranes, road machinery, etc.;
- precision machinery (20.8%): molding machines by injection, electric injection molding machines, medical use cyclotrons, etc.;
- equipment for environment protection (19.8%): energy generators, industrial wastewater processing systems, air pollution control units, etc.;
- machinery components (14.4%): power transmission and control systems (gears, power inverters, geared motors, gearboxes, etc.), motors, mechanical coupling systems, etc.;
- industrial equipment (11%): handling systems, logistic equipment, gas turbines, pumps, etc.;
- ships (4%);
- other (0.7%).
