Butte - Anglers, bicyclists, other recreationists and users of the Morony Dam area in Cascade County may experience some traffic delays.
Construction crews are installing new vertical lift spillway gates at the dam, which are heated to prevent ice buildup in the winter. When the project is complete, the facility will operate more efficiently in temperatures below freezing. McMillian Jacobs Associates is the engineering and primary contractor of the project.
The work will involve large cranes, barges and other heavy equipment. Users of the area, including the Morony Dam Fishing Access as well as the Sulphur Springs Trailhead, may experience traffic delays on Morony Dam Road.
Users are asked to watch for signs along the road and to observe the reduced speed limit. The safety of the crew and the public are NorthWestern Energy's priority.
The Morony Dam spillway gate project will be completed in 2023.
Morony Dam began producing electricity in January 1930. The dam was largely automated in 1959, with personnel upstream at Ryan Dam controlling its operation. Morony has a generating capacity of 49 megawatts and was named in honor of John Morony, a banker and one of the first directors of the Montana Power Co.
