New app enables physicians and clinical staff to remotely monitor real-time data from intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) devices via an iPad.

COPENHAGEN - inomed, a leading medical technology provider based in Germany, has announced the availability of an app that enables hospital staff to remotely monitor the signals of a patient's intraoperative nerve activity during surgery. The app, Remote Viewer, was developed for inomed by Netop and is based on their remote access application, Netop Remote Control Mobile for iOS. With inomed Remote Viewer, doctors and hospital personnel can securely and remotely track neuromonitoring signals - recorded on an inomed IONM device - in real-time.

"We're pleased to be working with inomed on the Remote Viewer," said Kurt Bager, CEO, Netop. "This is not only an example of how our remote access solutions can be leveraged across industry verticals to serve the evoling needs of our customers and partners, but also how our solutions perform in critical environments where reliability is an absolute necessity."

With Netop's remote access software solution now preinstalled on all inomed neuromonitoring devices, the app allows inomed to expand its product offerings and provide its customers with additional service levels. To activate the functionality users will need to purchase an inomed license for the company's neuromonitoring device, but the Remote Viewer app is free and available for iOS devices at the App Store.

Hospitals use interoperative neuromonitoring as a method to continuously monitor nerve activity of patients during surgery. These tools are designed to reduce risks for patients and provide guidance to doctors. As a global medical technology company, inomed's instruments and systems are used for intraoperative monitoring of neurological functions and are designed to improve effectiveness of critical surgical procedures.

The company was in need of a solution that provided an overview of a patient's neurophysiological activities so medical professionals could remotely monitor its IONM equipment. "Mobility within the hospital is becoming more and more important for our customers and users," says Jörg Wipfler, Head of Development at inomed.

inomed decided upon Netop's technology for the Remote Viewer because the company has been using Netop's secure remote control solution on its IONM systems for several years and Netop introduced an iOS app early in 2012 that enables remote system support while on the move.

The inomed Remote Viewer can be easily adapted to country-specific requirements for intraoperative monitoring. For example, in the United States, neuromonitoring is organized as a service provided by external clinical neurophysiologists. Here, neurophysiologists serve as external service providers to a number of clinics located across the country.

This kind of approach - supervising and consulting to several hospitals with different neuromonitoring cases remotely - is an ideal use case for inomed's technology and represents a promising market for solutions like inomed's Remote Viewer. "The app is currently not approved as a medical device," says Mr. Wipfler.

In addition to neuromonitoring, the inomed Remote Viewer can also be used for other applications, such as training, conferences and trade shows. In the future inomed plans to continue to market the app internationally, and to develop further apps.
