The climate agenda has become one of the most prominent agendas for large companies around the world. Neoenergia works with strategies from the perspective of the challenge of uniting business and social responsibility. Given the climate change landscape, governments, the private sector and civil society agree that global temperatures need to be limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The company actively participates in coalitions to contribute to discussions and effective actions to accelerate the energy transition in Brazil.

"We are committed to key alliances to engage the private sector on the climate agenda, such as CEBDS, the UN Global Compact, CEBRI and the E+ Institute (E+ Panel). We believe that integrating ESG aspects into business strategy is the path to sustainable growth. In this direction, we adopt sustainable development policies, such as Sustainable Management, Environmental, Climate Action and Biodiversity, always accompanied by our Sustainability Committee directly linked to the Board of Directors",says Mario Ruiz-Tagle, CEO of Neoenergia.

With the Climate Action Policy, the company has committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 towards neutrality by 2050. It is possible to highlight that by the end of 2022, with the entry into operation of the chafariz wind farmsin Paraíba and Oitis, located in Piauí and Bahia, in addition to the photovoltaic park of Luzia, also in the sertão of Paraíba, 90% of the company's installed capacity will be renewable.

Neoenergia's results are aligned with the norths that the IEA (International Energy Agency) signals are necessary for the energy transition to climate neutrality in the sector. Although the electricity sector is not responsible for highly significant impacts (electricity generation contributes 2% of carbon emissions in Brazil), it is a key element for the construction of a low-carbon economy and the electrification of the economy that will undergo precisely a transformation, driven by new technologies such as in the transport area with the greater efficiency of electric motors in the face of combustion engines.

For companies, we need to increase our ambition to fight climate change by monitoring emissions across our value chain through objective, measurable and auditable goals. In Brazil, companies have already adopted measures to reduce and offset greenhouse gas emissions, such as internal carbon pricing, decarbonization of operations and value chains, investments in green technologies and the establishment of corporate climate neutrality targets focused on 2030 and 2050.

"The business world is increasingly engaged in different multisectoral alliances that actively work towards a more sustainable and inclusive agenda, reinforcing the need for a political-regulatory definition that supports a sustainable path, in particular the adoption of rules that enable the development of voluntary and regulated carbon markets and the implementation of concrete climate actions by signatory companies", highlights the CEO.

One example is the UN Global Compact, which brings together more than 13,000 companies and 3,000 participants from other sectors from more than 160 countries and 70 local networks to engage the private sector in the Ten Principles of the Pact and the Sustainable Development Goals.

In the last decade, renewable energy has proven to be the most competitive source and the one that provides the greatest value creation for the economy as a whole, generating jobs and developing new technologies and preserving the environment. The strategy of recovering the economy with investments in green energy is northern our business and is in neoenergia's DNA. The company highlights tools and technologies that assist in this common goal, such as the arrival of electric cars, the digitization of networks and the development of green hydrogen.

The future is promising, Brazil has one of the cleanest electric matrices in the world and this more sustainable development model for a low-carbon economy is an advantage for all agents. Neoenergia believes that investments in renewable energy will position the electricity sector as an indispensable player to insert the country in a leading position in the new global geopolitics.
