Paediatric Ophthalmology Team Publishes Innovating Article

An innovating work elaborated by the paediatric ophthalmology team from Hospital da Luz Lisboa on optical coherence tomography (OCT) in children, has just been published in the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology, a scientific publication of the specialty.

OCT is a diagnostic technique with large relevance in the detailed evaluation of the optic nerve, allowing the visualization of this structure in great detail, similarly to histological cuts. In children, the OCT analysis is limited by the absence of normative bases.

With this study, the multidisciplinary team that conducted it - directed by Rita Dinis da Gama, also integrating Joana Chambel Santos, Rute Sousa Costa, Daniela Cândido da Costa and Nuno Eiró - was able to confirm that there is direct correlation between the parameters assessed by OCT and the dimension of the optic disk in children, contrary to adults.

The authors suggest that, when OCT normative bases are established in children, the size of the optic disk should be taken into consideration.
