The Naples Daily News has won a National Edward R. Murrow Award for Feature Reporting in the category of Online News Organizations for the multimedia effort, “Little Man and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

The paper’s award-winning print and online series documented Ethan Arbelo’s battle with terminal brain cancer until his death in July 2014 at age 12.

Naples Daily News photojournalist Dania Maxwell was honored with the Murrow Award – which typically recognizes broadcast journalists – for her documentary film that was part of the paper’s online coverage.

“Little Man and the Pursuit of Happiness was a unique multimedia story featuring a very unique boy and his family, and we are proud to have shared their journey with our readers,” said Manny Garcia, Editor of the Naples Daily News. “We are exceedingly proud of Dania and our entire team for providing their community with not only premiere news coverage, but for covering stories that shape views and truly make a difference.

“It's especially satisfying to see a newspaper playing and winning in this space, which speaks to the innovative story telling that we do at the Naples Daily News. We could not be prouder,” Garcia added.

Maxwell has also received recognition for her work on “Little Man and the Pursuit of Happiness” by the National Press Photographer’s Association (NPPA), the Pictures of the Year International competition, and the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Awards.

The Naples Daily News is one of 17 daily newspapers owned by Journal Media Group (NYSE: JMG) in 14 markets across the U.S.

"This recognition underscores the commitment of the Naples Daily News and all Journal Media Group newsrooms to tell the stories of the communities we serve on multiple platforms – and to do so in compelling and powerful ways," said Mizell Stewart III, managing director and chief content officer of Journal Media Group.

The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA), which hosts the Murrow Awards, will hold an awards ceremony on Oct. 12 in New York City.
