The connected consumer has emerged as a driving force in retail. Blogs, websites, online reviews, video rants -- and raves -- all provide instant insight that shapes what consumers buy, when and where they buy it, and at what price. Empowered and emboldened, this new breed of consumer expects personalized relationships and offerings delivered through flexible options.

A November 2011 study by Echo1 for American Express makes the case that the customer is king, indicating that nearly 80 percent of Americans surveyed have abandoned intended purchases because of poor customer service experiences. In contrast, they also indicated they would spend an average of 13 percent more with companies that provided excellent customer service. The survey also revealed that these same customers talk about their experiences, indicating they share information about good experiences with an average of nine people, but discuss bad experiences with nearly twice as many people.

According to JDA® Software Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: JDAS), The Supply Chain Company®, these characteristics are representative of the connected consumer, presenting both an opportunity and a threat for retailers. As a result, today's retailers must be able to operate in real time or be left behind. They must meet the demands of this new consumer while ensuring a positive, consistent shopping experience across multiple channels. To remain competitive, they must adapt and center their organizations with consumer-centric processes and organizational alignment. Most importantly, they must do so profitably.

JDA will showcase strategies for building the profitable retail supply chain of the future, unveil a major new customer engagement solution that could transform retail shopping experiences everywhere and share recent research results at the National Retail Federation's (NRF) 101st Annual Convention and Expo in New York City, Jan. 15-18, 2012. Retail's Big Show is the NRF's flagship 4-day industry event where the world's retailers and strategic partners gather once a year to share ideas, make connections, embrace technology and drive the industry forward.
