Tough fishing - tough weather

'Fishing has been on the slow side, and that's mainly due to the non-stop series of storms we've had recently. It has been rough every day and there's hardly a break in between them,' said skipper Friðrik Ingason who is fishing on HB Grandi's freezer trawler Höfrungur III in the Víkuráll Gully.

He said that the trip began on the 2nd of January

'We started on the Hampiðjan Square but there wasn't much to be had there. We shifted south to look for redfish, meaning deep redfish, and have been all over the Ridge deep south of Iceland. That wasn't good enough to keep us there, and since then we have been in the Víkuráll Gully, mostly in heavy weather. While we were down south looking for redfish there was good fishing on the Hali grounds and in the east, but that has dropped away now.'

He said that they are primarily looking for golden redfish, saithe and haddock mixed with cod.

'We could undoubtedly do well here on cod if we had the quota for it. On the other hand, fishing for redfish is pretty slow and the same goes for saithe. We never see any haddock in this kind of weather,' he said.

Höfrungur III is due in Reykjavík for a half-landing and to take fuel this weekend. After that they will sail right away for the rest of the trip that is scheduled to end on the 31st of January.
