MEDIA ALERT - CML HealthCare Inc. to Launch North America's First and World's Largest Fully Automated BD KiestraTM Microbiology Platform

Fully automated, digital platform can get results to physicians in as little as 12 hours post-inoculation, compared to traditional 48 hour protocols

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO -Sept. 19, 2013

WHO: CML HealthCare Inc.

WHAT: Ribbon cutting and tours of North America's first BD Kiestra TM Total Laboratory Automation (TLA) systems at CML's Central Laboratory. Combined, the two systems can perform 400 to 500 inoculations per hour on all specimen types (liquid and non-liquid), in addition to tracking the automated incubation and digital images of over 6500 inoculated media plates daily.

Tours of the laboratory will be provided to elected officials, business partners and media, who will be able to film/photograph the platform in full operation.

WHEN: Thursday, September 19 at 1:30 p.m. ET at CML's Central Laboratory,

6560 Kennedy Road, Mississauga, L5T 2X4

About the BD KiestraTM Total Laboratory Automation system at CML HealthCare As a leading Canadian community-based, medical diagnostic services provider, with a network of 114 Client C.A.R.E. Centres in Ontario, CML processes 8,000 - 10,000 microbiology tests each day. The BD KiestraTM TLA system automates the manual processes associated with inoculating and incubating microbiology specimens, and uses digital imaging of the inoculated specimens to shorten the time to detect bacterial

growth. The impacts of this technology include increased efficiency, enhanced quality, and faster turn-around time. The BD Kiestra TLA system, integrated with other rapid identification technologies at CML, represent a paradigm shift in the delivery of microbiology testing. They transform a previously manual discipline into an automated process that generates a more rapid diagnosis that can better guide treatment decisions and appropriate antibiotic utilization.
The BD Kiestra installation at CML has the capacity to perform 400 to 500 inoculations per hour on prepared media plates, tubes, and slides. Each inoculated specimen is uniquely identified by bar-code for full tracking and traceability. The increased precision and reproducibility of the system allow for improved recovery of infection-causing bacteria. A magnetic bead is used to achieve uniform spreading of the specimen and create distinct colonies for examination. A track system automatically delivers and retrieves plates from on-line incubators, and utilizes digital imaging technology to track organism growth. By tracking when specimen images are ready to analyze, the system directs technologists to more quickly identify suspicious organisms for rapid identification using technology integrated with the BD Kiestraplatform. The end result is reduction,
by more than half, of the turn-around time to identify organisms, compared to traditional protocols.
