Capella University, an accredited online university, offers unique opportunity to earn PsyD in School Psychology The online university's new degree program is the first and only PsyD in School Psychology available online

MINNEAPOLIS, January 30, 2012 - Capella University, an accredited online university* that has built its reputation by providing high-quality online degree programs for working adults, has announced a new PsyD in School Psychology degree program, the first and only such program available online. This advanced practitioner-oriented doctoral program is designed for licensed school psychologists seeking academic, clinical, research, or administrative leadership positions in the school psychology field.

"A review of literature indicates we are facing a serious shortage of qualified school psychologists," said David Chapman, PsyD, dean of Capella's Harold Abel School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. "The need for school psychology services is growing at the same time that retirements from the field are increasing, exacerbating the shortage, particularly at the doctoral level. This has created a shortage not only in practicing school psychologists, but in educators needed to train the new generation of school psychologists. Our online PsyD in School Psychology provides licensed school psychologists with the opportunity to further their education and help fulfill this need without putting their careers on hold."

Modeled on national standards for school psychology, Capella's program includes online course work, graduate teaching opportunities, and field experiences. The curriculum is designed to develop leaders and teachers in the field, with a focus on consultation, supervision, evaluation, research and planning, ethics, and intervention and prevention strategies.

Capella's instructors are all doctoral-level, licensed school psychologists with years of frontline experience, providing students with real-world insight and valuable mentoring. Laren Winter, EdD, who is a licensed school psychologist and a clinical member of the National Association of School Psychologists, serves as faculty chair of the program, and was academic lead during the development of the degree program. Dr. Winter has been teaching school psychology for more than a decade, and brings more than 20 years of clinical experience in psychology and counseling to the program, including 14 years as a school psychologist.

Capella also expands concentration offerings in its PhD in Psychology specializations

Capella offers its students a variety of ways to increase the value of their degree and expand their career options, including concentrations. Capella's Harold Abel School of Social and Behavioral Sciences has announced that it now offers seven concentrations within its PhD in Psychology program: Child Adolescent Development, Coaching Psychology, Consultation Psychology, Industrial Psychology, Organizational Psychology, Program Evaluation and Measurement, and Psychology Teaching and Instruction. Students in Capella's PhD in Psychology specializations in Addiction Psychology, Educational Psychology, General Psychology, or Industrial/Organizational Psychology can choose to complete one or more of these concentrations as part of their degree program. Students can use elective courses, if available, toward earning a concentration, which can reduce the additional time and cost of pursuing the concentration.

As of Sept. 30, 2011, more than 35,000 students are pursuing an online degree at Capella, with nearly 80 percent enrolled in Capella's doctoral degree programs and master's degree programs.
