MILWAUKEE, Jan. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Briggs & Stratton Corporation (NYSE: BGG) was recently recognized by Walmart™ as a contributor to their goal of lowering greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Specifically, the Company's work on the E Series engine was a significant contributor and the impetus behind Walmart's recognition.

"We are incredibly proud to be recognized by one of the largest retailers in the world," said Joe Wright, Senior Vice President and President, Engines Group, Briggs & Stratton. "Our E Series engines meet EPA emissions standards which are 35% stricter than previous standards. They also use less materials than previous models, thereby reducing the carbon footprint needed to build these engines in our Murray, Kentucky plant."

"Our goal to eliminate 20 million metric tons (MMT) of greenhouse gas (GHG) from our global supply chain over five years by the end of 2015 is purposely aggressive," as mentioned in the Walmart™ Sustainability Hub.

Briggs & Stratton's continued commitment to sustainability is to make products with reduced emissions that run efficiently and include recycled content.  Although what was called the 450/500/550 Series was the best-selling engine in Briggs & Stratton's history, the Company realized that it was time to design and introduce a new engine - the E Series - that would be made with less materials and would run more efficiently with lower emissions.  The E Series™ would become the successor to the 450/500/550 Series.

Walmart's Sustainability Goals can be summarized in three steps: To be supplied 100% by renewable energy; To create zero waste; and to sell products that sustain people and the environment. These goals fit in perfectly with Briggs & Stratton's three sustainability pillars of People, Planet and Profit. Briggs & Stratton is proud of the way we have incorporated sustainability practices in several areas of our business.
