Shares of energy companies rose alongside oil and natural gas prices.

Natural-gas futures surged, adding more than 6% to close at their highest level in almost three months, after the Energy Information Administration reported a surprisingly large drawdown in U.S. supplies.

Oil futures closed at another more-than one-year high amid anticipation of tight global supplies.

European oil giant Royal Dutch Shell reported a fourth-quarter loss as it continued to grapple with the fallout of the pandemic but said it would raise its dividend, forecasting a recovery in demand later this year.
