WASHINGTON, January 22, 2016-World Bank Office for the Caribbean issued the following statement today:

'The Government of Suriname has approached the World Bank to discuss possible financial support for its response to the sharp fall in international commodity prices. Complementing the reform program that the government is currently discussing with the IMF, the Government is taking steps to strengthen international reserves, support shared economic growth, and ensure financial stability.

Together with the Caribbean Development Bank, and the Inter-American Development Bank, we stand ready to help Suriname meet its economic challenges, including the need to improve competitiveness, diversification, public sector modernization, and other requirements for sustained economic growth. At the request of the authorities, a mission will visit Paramaribo in the next few weeks for discussions on Suriname's reform program and financing needs'.
