The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) congratulates the People's Republic of China and all other Founding Members of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) on the successful launch of the Bank in Beijing today.
'UNDP believes that the AIIB will play an important role in funding Asia's infrastructure needs, and thereby contribute to meeting national development goals and the global Sustainable Development Goals,' said Helen Clark, Chair of the UN Development Group and UNDP Administrator, in a video statement.
UNDP and AIIB held substantive consultations in 2015 on key aspects of the Bank's work, including environment and social frameworks for screening investments, South-South cooperation and knowledge sharing.
Attending the opening ceremony of the AIIB in Beijing, Mr. Haoliang Xu, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, said 'UNDP stands ready to help facilitate linkages between AIIB's initiatives and development activities at the national and regional levels to accelerate changes needed to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.'
