• The workshop was held within the framework of the BioPaSOS project, with the aim of strengthening the organization among producers and that they can access new markets

January 11, 2021. In collaboration with La Sepultura Biosphere Reserve of the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (REBISE-CONANP), of the GEF Sustainable Landscapes project of Conservation International (CI) Mexico, the project Biodiversity and Sustainable Agro-silvopastoral Landscapes, known as BioPaSOS, strengthened the capacities of livestock producers in the community of Los Angeles, in Chiapas, Mexico, in issues related to the importance of organization and the formation of legal entities.

'Through capacity building for producing families, we want them to know the importance of working in an organized manner, as well as the benefits they can obtain by working in this way,' said José Antonio Jiménez, coordinator of the BioPaSOS project in Chiapas.

In this workshop, which took place on December 18, 2020, 26 people participated (13 women and 13 men), all members of Los Angeles Field School and the Cheese Factory, which develops BioPaSOS.

On this opportunity, the workshop was led by Bulmaro Castillejos, from the Integra Law Firm, a specialist in legal figures, who spoke about the figure of the Society of Rural Production of Limited Resources (S.P.R. de R.L.,its Spanish acronym), explaining in detail what are the requirements for forming such a figure, as well as the responsibilities and obligations.

Castillejos mentioned that it is very important for producers to group together, since working in an organized manner not only reduces their production costs, but also allows them to access markets that better position their products.

In the same way, Gerardo Ruiz, representative of the Los Angeles Field School and the Cheese Factory, mentioned that it is of interest to those who are part of the cheese factory business to know about the legal figures and to identify which one is the most adequate for their needs and characteristics.

In this regard, the producing families agreed that the legal figure that best suits their needs is the S.P.R. de R.L.

Jiménez said that what BioPaSOS seeks is to consolidate and strengthen producers so that they can diversify their products, access differentiated markets and increase their income from the sale of their products.

The BioPaSOS Project is implemented by CATIE (Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center), with the support of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), in coordination with the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (CONABIO, its Spanish acronym) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRICULTURE), with funding from the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and with multiple local partners in their areas of intervention.
