Retail trade turnover higher at the monthly and at the annual level

The volume turnover in retail trade in December 2016 grew at the monthly level for the third consecutive month, although this month the increase was less pronounced, since it was only 0.1% higher than in the previous month. The growth was influenced by retail sale of motor fuels, where the volume turnover was 7.5% higher than in November, while the volume turnover in retail trade except motor fuel declined at the monthly level. Turnover in retail trade of food was down by 4.6%, while turnover from the sale of non-food remained the same as in November.

At the annual level, the growth of volume turnover in retail trade was more pronounced; it was 10.1% higher than in December 2015. The annual growth was also mostly affected by the higher turnover in specialised stores with motor fuels (by 34.3%). Additionally, turnover in retail trade except motor fuel was higher too (by 1.1%). Compared to December 2015, the volume turnover in the retail trade of food decreased by 5.4%. As in all other months of 2016, turnover in trade with non-food increased at the annual level; it was 8% higher than in December 2015.

In 2016 the volume turnover in retail trade increased by 3.8% compared to 2015. The growth was mostly affected by the higher turnover in specialised stores with motor fuels (by 7.4%) and higher turnover in retail trade of non-food products (by 6.8%), while turnover in retail trade of food was lower than in 2015 (by 1.0%). In the first eleven months of 2016 (data for December 2016 are not yet available) turnover in retail trade of non-food products was higher than in the same period of 2015 for all of the observed groups, and like in 2015, the largest increase was recorded in sale via mail or via the Internet (by 20.4%).

Turnover in trade and repair of motor vehicles higher at the monthly and at the annual level

The volume turnover in wholesale, retail trade and repair of motor vehicles continued to grow in December 2016 at the monthly and at the annual level. Compared to the previous month it increased by 5.0% and compared to the same month of the previous year by 32.5%.

In 2016, the volume turnover in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles was 22.7% higher than in the previous year, which was the highest growth since 2008.
