PRETORIA (Reuters) - South Africa's unemployment rate rose to 32.9% in the first quarter of 2024 from 32.1% in the fourth quarter of 2023, data from the statistics agency showed on Tuesday.

Statistics South Africa said the number of unemployed people rose to 8.226 million in the first three months of this year from 7.895 million in the fourth quarter of last year.

Under an expanded definition of employment, which includes those discouraged from looking for work, 41.9% were unemployed in January-March, compared to 41.1% in the preceding three months.
