Sonian, the pioneer in cloud-powered email archiving, today announced findings from a recent survey designed to better understand the technical and business ramifications of managing email that companies are faced with every day. Based on input from 377 respondents from industries including retail, wholesale and technology, Sonian found that there is a large number of data retention and retrieval challenges and opportunities in today's rapidly evolving business environment. In fact, nearly half of respondents (45%) admitted to facing challenges in managing and accessing emails.

Due to the unyielding proliferation of data within organizations of all sizes, companies are looking to solve the problem of adequately retaining emails, files, documents and general enterprise data for compliant search and retrieval, known as eDiscovery. Professionals in jobs ranging from human resources to legal to IT are constantly in need of quick and simple access to information, which is critical to their productivity and the success of the overall business. Findings from Sonian's survey highlight the frustration of professionals who face issues in accessing essential information they need.

Additional key findings from the survey include:

  • 75 percent of respondents acknowledged their email contains valuable intellectual property
  • 45 percent of respondents conceded that email storage is an ongoing challenge
  • Nearly 25 percent of respondents (24%) indicated they are planning a cloud-based email initiative in the next 12 months
  • Almost a quarter of respondents (24%) noted that their Exchange servers are overtaxed

"In the era of the cloud, where information is supposed to be more readily accessible than ever, we're seeing IT professionals still struggling due to ineffective information archiving capabilities within their organizations," said Greg Arnette, co-founder and CTO of Sonian. "The rate at which we create data is exploding, which means the challenges of managing and accessing that data will only be compounded. Sonian wants to make managing all of that a lot simpler by being a single platform where users can access the information that they need, without being a storage burden to the business."

As the volume of email communications and other business-critical information continues to grow, cloud archiving is becoming an increasingly popular method of management. Today, Sonian archives house more than 8 billion objects for more than 14,000 customers in 40 countries, and those cloud-based archives grow an average of 300 gigabytes each day. Sonian is 100 percent web-based, platform agnostic and can be deployed quickly to get companies up and running in minutes to start realizing the cost savings and peace of mind that come with secure, scalable data preservation.
