Mud for fuel
January 9, 2015

Jiangzhuang, January 9 - The first impression of the compound of Jianyang Power Plant is quite clean and tidy, with rows of trees guarding the spotless roads. Yet the plant indeed feeds on something not so spotless, rather more sticky.

Under the roof of the plant building, a pile of grayish lump reached up to ten meters. "These are the mud, can you smell it? Just imagine the damage it would do if it is directly discharged into the environment." Said Hao Peilong, chief engineer of Jiangzhuang Mine, Shandong Energy Zaozhuang Mining Group.

The mud came from sewage plants and paper mills nearby. The conventional approach was sending it to the landfill, which wastes land resource and cause pollution. Since it is fiber-rich, the mud could be blend with coal as fuel. Mixed by the proportion of 80% mud and 20% coal, and broken into grains, the mud-coal was conveyed to the boiler.

Currently , Jiangzhuang Mine receives mud from nearby sewage station for free. Every ton of mud could produce 300 kw power. The heat, as a byproduct, could supply 2.2 million square meters of indoor area. The plant was also equipped with emission-cleansing device to prevent air pollution, bringing in 42.9 million yuan of revenue every year.

The residue of mud still is not worthless. Cement mills are more than happy to use it as raw material, bringing another two million yuan.
