The Asylum has released a graphic novelization of their upcoming film JAILBAIT, starring Sara Malakul Lane, Erin O'Brien, and Steve Hanks in the gritty tale of a young woman thrust into the perils of prison life. The comic book, titled 17 & Life: Jailbait, was published in December in advance of the film's DVD release.

Jared Cohn, the film's writer and director, has directed several other Asylum productions including 2013's ATLANTIC RIM. Cohn originated the idea for the indie comic, and Gabriel Campisi served as editor-in-chief in charge of bringing the comic to life. "The storyline was complex, but The Asylum gave me the creative freedom to have fun with it," says Campisi. "The biggest challenge was meeting the deadline."

So why would a film company famous for TV gorefests like SHARKNADO jump into the world of comics?

"At last year's Comic Con in San Diego, the fans lined up around the building, waiting to meet the cast of SHARKNADO," says David Rimawi, a partner at The Asylum. "We realized comic book fans are some of the most dedicated out there. Why not give them a treat?"

Rimawi's co-founder and partner David Latt says the company is taking a look-and-see approach at the possibility of creating more comics for their movies in the future. "If Jailbait does well, there may be more comics on the horizon."

The film JAILBAIT will be released on DVD and VOD February 18. 17 & Life: Jailbait is now available from Indyplanet.
