The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is urging Pennsylvanians to test their homes for radon in January as part of national Radon Action Month, according to Senator Randy Vulakovich.

Radon, a colorless and odorless gas, is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Radon occurs naturally from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rocks and enters homes through cracks in the foundation or other openings.

'Radon is a silent killer. You will never know it is in your home without testing,' Senator Vulakovich said. 'Since we keep our houses sealed up in the winter, now is the best time for testing to determine how much radon is accumulating.'

More information about radon, including lists of certified radon testers and mitigation services, is available by clicking on the 'Radon Gas in Pennsylvania' link on the DEP's website www.dep.pa.gov. The DEP Radon Division may be contacted toll-free at (800) 237-2366 or by email at ra-epbrpenvprt@pa.gov.
