CES BOOTH #3902 – At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018, Pioneer showcases the foundation for its next 80 years of automotive innovation – including both aftermarket and automotive OEM technologies. Featured in the booth is Pioneer’s full line of aftermarket products that offer superior smartphone connectivity and audio solutions to upgrade practically any vehicle. The company continues its automotive electronics industry leadership by displaying technologies crucial to the development of both autonomous and piloted driving modes. Demonstrations include Pioneer’s advanced Concept Cockpit driving experience, Laser Head-up Display (HUD), and 3D Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) system for vehicles and Flexible OLED Tail Light and Turn Signal.

At the booth, visitors will get a sense of what driving the car of the future may feel like. Technologies on display include:

  • Advanced Concept Cockpit demonstration for automated driving
    • Driver Monitoring System
The driver’s status must be monitored in order to determine whether he or she is alert and capable of re-engaging with the vehicle and taking control of driving. Pioneer’s Driver Monitoring System is designed to detect driver conditions with image status and recognition technology used to estimate attentiveness, drowsiness, tension and fatigue.
      • Drowsiness Detection Camera for condition and status of the driver
      • Seat mounted Microwave Heart-rate Sensor for condition and status of the driver
      • Steering Wheel Sensor
      • Seat Vibration to improve level of alertness
    • Sensory UI
During highly automated driving conditions, the driver will not be required to monitor the vehicle’s status. However, the driver is expected to be available for occasional control but with a sufficiently comfortable transition time. The Sensory UI demonstration promotes safe and reliable operation during the automated driving mode and the critical hand-off between automated driving and manual driving. Pioneer’s Sensory UI incorporates the use of light, directional sound, intuitive touch and video for improvement of driver recognition and responsiveness to manual driving commands.
      • 3D-AUI with AR (Audio/Sound)
      • Laser Head Up Displays with Augmented Reality Technology (Video)
      • Dash LED (Light)
      • Active Feely (Touch)
      • Seat Vibration (Feel)
    • Entertainment for Level 3 Automated Vehicle
Autonomous driving will also allow the driver to experience a second task and consume more information, with entertainment features and options playing a larger role.
      • Center Multimedia Display (Entertainment)
      • Sound Generator (Relaxation)
      • Seat Vibration
      • Automated Seat Position Control
  • 3D-LiDAR
    • Flexible system configuration for cost reduction and downsizing
    • Pioneer is developing multiple types of LiDARs for various applications and design requirements
      • High Resolution Telescopic
      • Medium Range
      • Semi-wide View and Wide View
  • Advanced Map Data Ecosystem
    • Collects dynamic environmental information from vehicles on the road and updates data automatically.

    • Global HD (high definition) map offering support to vehicles across all levels of automation. HD mapping will be a vital technology in ensuring autonomous vehicles can transport passengers safely, efficiently and comfortably. The technology will be created through a development partnership between HERE Technologies, the Netherlands-based global provider of mapping and location services, and Increment P Corporation (IPC), a mapping subsidiary of Pioneer Corporation for HD mapping.
  • Flexible OLED Tail Light and Turning Signal
    • Manufactured with the thin and bendable features of flexible OLED lighting panels offering greater flexibility of design compared with conventional vehicle tail lights.
    • Pioneer proposes the use of flexible OLED lighting features as an interface in the shared-use autonomous driving vehicles of the future. The use of lighting inside and outside the vehicle for circumstances such as information for offering safety and comfort to users of shared-use vehicles, and offering visual cues of the vehicle’s position and status to surrounding vehicles and pedestrians.
    • The flexible OLED lighting panel is developed by Konica Minolta Pioneer OLED, Inc.
  • Head-up Display (HUD)
    • Advanced laser scanning HUD featuring high brightness, contrast, and color purity. Visitors can see a highly visible HD display projected in front of the windshield.

Pioneer’s OEM and aftermarket divisions have a long history of innovation in the automotive industry. The OEM division has been a trusted Tier 1 supplier to automakers for over 40 years, maintaining longstanding relationships with popular and well-respected global automotive brands. Over the past 50 years, Pioneer has introduced industry-changing products and features including the first car CD player (CDX-1 in 1984), the first satellite navigation system for cars (AVIC-1 introduced in Japan in 1990), the first single colored OLED display technology (1998), the first smartphone-based headunit with iPhone® (AppRadio® SPH-DA01 in 2011), and the industry-first combination of Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ on one headunit (AVIC-8100NEX, AVIC-7100NEX, AVIC-4100NEX in 2015).

Drivers have relied on Pioneer’s aftermarket division to answer their demands for the best sound and latest technology since the 1960s, when the company launched its first line of car stereos in the United States. At the CES booth, Pioneer demonstrates how it continues to push the aftermarket category, offering the next major implementation of smartphone connectivity, as well as a variety of entertainment and audio solutions for those looking to upgrade their vehicles.

To deliver this message, three vehicles with aftermarket upgrades will be on display in the Pioneer CES 2018 booth: two 2018 Toyota® CH-R vehicles and one 2018 Toyota Tacoma® truck. One CH-R is dedicated to demonstrations of Android Auto Wireless using a Pioneer prototype in-dash receiver. The other CH-R is reserved for demonstrations of Pioneer’s latest implementation of Apple CarPlay connectivity. The third vehicle, a 2018 Toyota Tacoma, features a dual speaker system configuration of both Pioneer’s Z-series and D-series advanced automotive loudspeakers, consisting of both full range components and subwoofers. This unique and unprecedented installation provides simple A/B switching between systems, allowing listeners to easily evaluate the audible difference between the Z-series and D-series loudspeakers without exiting the vehicle.

The year 2018 also marks Pioneer’s 80th anniversary. To commemorate 80 years of leadership and innovation in the consumer electronics industry, Pioneer will be showcasing the DXT-P99RS-80 high-end car audio package model available for purchase for a limited time in different markets, including the U.S. The package includes:

  • 80th Anniversary DEX-P99RS
  • 80th Anniversary PRS-D800 (qty 3)
