Compact Imaging, Inc. (CI), an early stage technology company developing proprietary optical sensors for the rapidly expanding market for mobile personal health and fitness monitoring, today announced that it has been granted three additional patents in the field.

CI's intellectual property base, consisting of 11 US patents and numerous pending US and foreign applications, is centered on MRO TM, the Company's proprietary version of optical coherence tomography (OCT), a well-established, non-invasive, non-ionizing imaging technology widely used in clinical diagnostic applications, according to Don Bogue, CEO. "These new patents are important additions to our IP foundation as we continue our development of sensors that address the need for high value biometrics in fast-growing mobile personal health and fitness monitoring markets.

"These new patents further strengthen our position with our innovative MRO TM technology," he said. "We are moving steadily forward with MRO TM, a non-invasive precision optical architecture that is inherently compact and low cost. At volume, we expect MRO TM-based sensors will be similar in size and cost to today's optical pickup units for DVD drives."

The three new patents are:

  • Precision Measurement System (US 8,605,290): Non-invasive imaging and analysis method and system.
  • Noise Tolerant Measurement (US 8,577,432): Measurement method and system that performs well in low signal-to-noise environments.
  • Dual Wavelength Scanning System (US 8,570,528): Acquiring information over a large range within a target.

The underlying imaging technology, optical coherence tomography (OCT), was first commercialized more than a decade ago for use in medical diagnostic imaging. CI's MRO TM architecture enables design of very small, low cost devices ideally suited to integration in both high volume mobile applications and large multi-purpose instruments for office or clinic use.

CI also is engaged in a collaboration with laboratory teams of tissue optics researchers and scientists at the National University of Ireland, Galway, for the longer-term development of MRO TM.
