With more waste than usual being put out for collection between Christmas and New Year, North Devon Council is reminding residents of the importance of recycling their festive leftovers during the holiday period.

The council will be using larger refuse lorries to pick up some recycling during the Christmas period, rather than the usual smaller recycling vehicles. The council wants to reassure residents that this is purely to accommodate the anticipated increase in recycling, and the items will be recycled as usual, not sent to landfill.

Executive Member for Environment, Councillor Rodney Cann, says: 'With all the extra food, drinks and gifts over the festive period it is normal to see an increase in the amount of recycling. This is a very positive thing, and we encourage residents to recycle as much as they can during this busy time. In order to cope with this additional material, we will be using refuse lorries to make some recycling collections, but residents can feel confident that all items we pick up in these vehicles will still be recycled.'

Here's a reminder of some of the festive items that can be recycled:

  • Christmas cards without glitter (to go in brown bags)
  • Christmas card envelopes (to go in green bags)
  • Cardboard (flatten boxes and put in your brown bag. If you fill your brown bag and have lots of excess cardboard, please hold onto it until your next recycling collection)
  • Food waste, including turkey bones (to go in kerbside caddies)
  • Batteries (to go in green box)
  • Small electrical items (to go in green box)
  • Real Christmas trees (for those who have registered for garden waste collection,
  • Christmas trees can be cut up and put into green bins, or left by the side. Trunks must be less than 50mm in diameter. For those who don't have garden waste collections, please take your tree to one of Devon County Council's recycling centres)
  • Unfortunately, wrapping paper cannot be recycled, so this must go in your black wheelie bin or black bag.

To find out collection days over the festive period, residents can go to the council's website www.northdevon.gov.uk/collectiondates. The webpage also gives households the opportunity to download and print off a refuse collection timetable, specifically for their property.

If residents would like a collection timetable but do not have access to a computer, they can contact Customer Services on 01271 327711 or email customerservices@northdevon.gov.uk and they will arrange for a copy to be sent out.
