Nordic Sugar A/S : Record-sweet production campaign in Lithuania

The sugar factory in Kedainiai has now completed 2018/19 sugar production campaign. A campaign characterized by smooth, stable production and extraordinarily clean beet with a record-high sugar content. For the first time it also included processing of organic beet.

On December 22 after approx. 90 days of production, the factory in Kedainiai, Lithuania, could process its last sugar-rich beet after a campaign breaking one record after the other.

Head of Sugar Factory Dainius Cibulskis is very content with the results: 'The sugar quality has been good, the energy consumption record low and the slicing capacity record high. In periods, we have produced 15 per cent more sugar per day than we did last campaign. By means of our employees great effort and competence we have been able to achieve these very satisfying results!'

The investments ahead of the campaign in a new molasses tank and not least in the preparations for the organic sugar production that 2018/19 should run for the first in Kedainiai have also delivered as expected.

'We conducted tests with sugar production in organic mode during last year's campaign, so we were well prepared for the new challenges. On the back of an excellent organic beet quality and dedicated employees, we were able to run a successful weeklong organic campaign before starting-up the conventional beet sugar production period', says Dainius Cibulskis.

Good output despite challenging growing conditions
The challenging growing conditions in 2018 with very dry weather have affected the beet yield, which is slightly below the five-year average. However, the sunny weather have resulted in record-high sugar content and a sugar yield of 9.94 tonner per hectare, which is well in line with the five-year average. Furthermore, the remarkable cleanness in the delivered beet has had a favorable impact in the production.

The production campaign is now completed at the sugar factories in Finland and Lithuania. Nordzucker expects to have completed the 2018/19 production season at all its factories by mid-January.
