SAN RAMON, CA and CLEVELAND, OH--(Marketwired - Jan 25, 2016) - (IHE North America Connectathon) -- Nextrials, Inc., a leader in clinical research software and services, will participate for the eighth consecutive time in the annual IHE North America Connectathon, to be held January 25-29 in Cleveland, OH. Sponsored by Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE), Connectathon features the world's largest interoperability testing event involving over 550 engineers and 100 organizations.

"We have participated in Connectathon since almost the inception of the relevant research standards," said Nextrials' CTO Robert Barr. "As a result, Nextrials has become one of the leaders in promoting the interoperability of electronic data capture (EDC) with the array of electronic health records (EHR) systems found in the healthcare setting."

For the first time in a large interoperability setting using a live data stream, Nextrials will test the new Structured Data Capture (SDC) format developed by a collaborative industry initiative. SDC is a standards-based architecture that enables datasets to be accessed from EHRs and stored for merger with commonly collected data in clinical trials, such as data found in an electronic Case Report Form (eCRF) or the Incident Report for patient safety. The new SDC format will help sponsors more quickly enroll patients in clinical trials by prepopulating intake patient data.

"The Connectathon events help showcase and solve the interoperability problems associated with today's disparate EHR software," said Nextrials CEO James Rogers. "Lately, new scrutiny on the issues surrounding the inability to widely use EHRs outside of their companies of residence has placed additional pressure on the entire industry to come up with solutions, and quickly. These tests, especially ones using the new SDC format, could eventually have a dramatic impact on the efficiency of future clinical drug trials and how they can leverage existing patient records."

Other standards that Nextrials will test during Connectathon include:

  • Retrieve Form for Data Capture
  • Retrieve Protocol for Execution
  • Audit Trail and Node Authentication
  • Clinical Research Document
  • Consistent Time
  • Drug Safety Content
  • Cross Enterprise User Assertion

All of these standards can be used to more quickly launch a new clinical study and accelerate data collection.
