Vienna,2017-01-27 - In 2016, around 140.85 million (+4.2%) overnight stays were registered, according to Statistics Austria's latest preliminary data. This is the best result since the beginning of statistical data collection. The overnight stays of resident visitors increased by 4.4% to 38.01 million, those by non-resident visitors by 4.1% and reached 102.84 million. Germany - which is the most important country of origin - showed an increase in overnights by 4.9% to 52.64 million. A severe decrease was recorded for Russian overnights (-17.8% to 0.98 million). The year 2016 still backs the tendency to choose high quality accommodation establishments. The number of overnights in the 5/4-star category rose by 3.5% and reached a market share in total overnights by 36%. The most dynamic development was observed in the category of commercial holiday dwellings (+9.4%).

The number of arrivals at accommodation establishments which equals the number of guests reached 41.45 million which means an increase by 5.2% compared to the year 2015. The average length of stay at accommodation establishments in 2016 was 3.4 overnights.

A decrease by 4.2% of overnights was observed for the first two months of the winter season 2016/17 (November and December).
