On 18 January, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the Ambassador of Iran to Lithuania Ramin Mehmanparast, who resides in Warsaw. Linkevičius expressed gladness that Lithuania and Iran signed the intergovernmental agreement on economic cooperation, when Lithuania's Foreign Minister was paying a visit to Iran on 29 May 2016. The agreement entered into force on 4 January of this year.

The Ambassador of Iran stressed that the agreement opened up opportunities for intensifying economic relations between the two countries and called for the prompt establishment of the foreseen Intergovernmental Commission, which would be the main collaboration tool.

The agreement provides a framework for mutually beneficial economic cooperation aimed at promoting industry in the sectors of energy, transport, science and technology, information technology, agriculture and other areas.
