Mediware's JAC to Support 12 Hospitals Across Northern Ireland with ?Enterprise Medication Management Technology

Multi-site capabilities in software focus on cost savings, efficiency improvements and enhance continuity of patient care.

() announced that its JAC Computer Services Limited (JAC) business was selected by Northern Ireland Health and Social Care (HSC) to deliver a pan-Northern Ireland Pharmacy Software Solution for the Business Services Organization (BSO) Information and Technology Service (ITS). The contract, which was awarded to Mediware's JAC under a Technology Partnership Agreement that BSO has with Hewlett-Packard, includes four hospital trusts and 12 hospital locations across Northern Ireland.

The requirements for the Northern Ireland Pharmacy Software Solution will be met by the implementation of JAC's new Enterprise Release Version 5. This release has the ability to support multiple hospital sites on a single system to enable cost, efficiency and safety improvements.

"Our JAC stock control software is already used by more than 50 percent of the hospitals throughout England so I'm very pleased that we continue to expand with major new contracts," said Thomas Mann, Mediware's president and chief executive officer. "Northern Ireland HSC, as with our other large government contracts, is seeking software solutions with enterprise wide information management capabilities to streamline patient care. We have made significant investments in many of our products to deliver these capabilities and I'm pleased to see this strategy validated."

The 12 hospitals in the four hospital trusts across Northern Ireland will share the same master files and yet software access can be configured to support local requirements. This will provide HSC sites a single medication dispensing record for each patient across Northern Ireland and make the dispensing history accessible as patients move between hospitals across the region.

Some of the key HSC objectives that the JAC enterprise medication management software will address include:

  • Support a range of pharmaceutical actions directed to improving the healthcare outcomes of patients
  • Generate efficiencies in stock management and dispensing processes, including aligning coding standards and business processes across the region
  • Provide the information required to implement performance and risk management and the devolvement of budget responsibility within Trusts
  • Make more efficient use of storage space within the existing pharmacies
  • Support the ongoing delivery and development of the Medicines Management initiative and e-Prescribing.

Dr. Norman Morrow, the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer at the Department of Health and Social Care said: "The implementation of this new system will significantly modernize the technology support to further improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our pharmacy and medicines management services."

Rob Tysall-Blay CEO JAC Computer Services Ltd said: "Northern Ireland HSC were looking for a single system that could support all of its Trusts and organizations, to enable truly joined-up medications management that follows patients along their pathways of care. This will not only enable more effective and efficient control of drug usage, but will also realize significant economies for the HSC. This is truly a landmark project in the UK, and I believe it will be the model for future large-scale deployments."

JAC's Enterprise Release Version 5, is currently being rolled out across 41 hospitals in Western Province South Africa, and is based on the proven platform already deployed in over half of the NHS trusts in England.
