Maine Public Utilities Commission : and the Maine Fuel Board Encourages the Safe Use of Propane and Natural Gas

Hallowell, Maine - As we enter the winter season, the Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) and the Maine Fuel Board urge the safe use of natural gas and propane. 'Natural gas and propane are safe and reliable sources of energy when used properly,' observed Mark Vannoy, Chairman of the MPUC. 'But, as with all fuels, safety should always be our first priority. If you smell gas, leave the area immediately and call 911. If you have questions regarding the safe use of natural gas or propane, call your local natural gas or propane supplier.'

The MPUC and the Maine Fuel Board encourages everyone to follow these simple but vital precautions:

• If you are indoors and smell gas:

Leave the structure immediately and make sure that all other occupants do the same.

Do not turn on or off any electrical equipment or light switches, or do anything else that could create a spark or flame.

Once safely outside the structure, call 911 and the natural gas or propane supplier using a cell phone or a neighbor's phone. If you do not know the natural gas or propane supplier, simply call 911.

Once outside, stay outside until you have been authorized to return by the fire department or natural gas or propane supplier.

• If you are outdoors and smell gas:

Leave the area immediately.

Once you are a safe distance away, call 911 and the natural gas or propane supplier. Again, if you do not know the natural gas or propane supplier, simply call 911.

• If you have natural gas or propane appliances in your home or business:

Make sure any air intake and exhaust vents are clear of snow, ice, or any other obstructions.

Be sure that any gas meters, pressure regulators, and piping are clear of snow and ice that could cause damage or prevent their proper function. Use caution when clearing snow around these facilities to make sure they are not damaged.

Make sure your home heating equipment is inspected annually by a licensed technician. This is important for safety and efficiency.

LP and Natural gas and oil heating system installations and servicing must be conducted by technicians licensed by the Maine Fuel Board at the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation (www.maine.gov/pfr).

Both LP and Natural gas installations by licensed technicians require conformance to nationally recognized codes adopted by the Maine Fuel Board.

The MPUC has safety jurisdiction over Maine's natural gas utilities, intrastate natural gas transmission pipelines, and certain propane distribution systems. The Maine Fuel Board licenses technicians who install and service LP, natural gas, and oil heating systems.
