Madison Gas and Electric (MGE), our regulated utility, has installed nearly 450 solar panels on its six-story headquarters in downtown Madison. The system, which is expected to generate nearly 10 percent of the energy needed annually to power the facility, is another step in the company's ongoing path toward greater sustainability. The panels-capable of producing 141 kilowatts (kW) of power-began generating energy in December 2017.
MGE also upgraded the solar canopy in its nearby visitor and employee parking lot, replacing the previous array with 52 more efficient solar panels capable of producing double the energy output.
Electric vehicle fast charger added to MGE solar canopy
MGE's public charging network for electric vehicles (EVs) continues to expand.
In late 2017, the company added a DC Fast Charger under its solar canopy in a nearby visitor and employee parking lot at its corporate office. Any vehicle with quick charge capability can use the station. From a nearly depleted battery, quick chargers can charge a battery to 80% in about 30 minutes.
The addition brings the number of EV charging stations across the area to 29-that includes two DC Fast Chargers. MGE's charging stations provide electricity that is 100% renewable-generated by wind farms in Wisconsin and Iowa.
