HIMSS Analytics has awarded long-time MEDITECH customer, Avera McKennan Hospital (Sioux Falls, SD) with the prestigious Stage 7 Award — the highest level on the HIMSS Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM).

“Congratulations to Avera McKennan for earning Stage 7 recognition, and reaching the highest industry standard of EHR utilization,” said MEDITECH President and CEO Howard Messing. “MEDITECH values our strong partnership with Avera Health, and their commitment to exceptional patient care inspires us to develop innovative, groundbreaking EHR solutions for our customers.”

Avera McKennan is a 545-bed tertiary hospital and flagship of Avera Health’s large network of 300 care locations. Examples of Avera McKennan’s renowned, world-class patient care include:

  • eCARE/Telemedicine: Embracing technology to provide care to a large geographical area. Some key results include $33 million savings/year, 1,370 lives saved, and 49,000 ICU days eliminated
  • Sepsis Screening: Screening of all ED and acute patients resulted in 37% mortality rate reduction and savings of $5,080 per case (2014-2015)
  • Pharmacogenomics: Personalized Pharmacogenomics Report includes medication recommendations based on the patient’s genetic profile, personal health history, and home medications to help drive clinical decision support on orders
  • Health Information Exchange: Avera’s HIE spans across 40 states

Avera Health is advancing their EHR with the implementation of MEDITECH’s 6.1 Web EHR, which offers sophisticated tools for population health and improving provider productivity. Avera’s commitment to delivering safe, efficient, and fiscally responsible care to their community were key factors in the decision to move forward with 6.1.

“Avera McKennan is honored to be named as a HIMSS Stage 7 health system. Our staff have been working diligently to implement a fully integrated electronic medical record across the Avera system,” said Dave Kapaska, DO, regional president and CEO of Avera McKennan in HIMSS Analytics’ press release. “We are grateful to the Avera leaders, physicians, and staff who are quick to welcome new technology that advances the safety and quality of our care.”
