The Liberty County Probate Court is where one goes to get a birth certificate or death certificate or marriage license. And it is so much more. The word probate as defined in the dictionary as the legal process by which the authenticity and validity of a will is established. Prior to 1975, the probate court was known as the Court of Ordinary and the judge of probate court was known as the Ordinary.

It is "a court having jurisdiction over the probate of wills, the grant of administration, and the supervision of the management and settlement of the estates of decedents, including the collection of assets, the allowance of claims, and the distribution of the estate." In Georgia, the probate court "also has jurisdiction of the estates of minors, including the appointment of guardians and conservators and the settlement of their accounts." This very important task of which Judge Nancy Aspinwall administers is how minors, for one reason or another, live in a home that is not under the direct supervision of a parent or parents. A

temporary guardianship can be obtained after the guardian or guardians go through a thorough background check. This is monitored by probate court as personal status reports and updates are required during the guardianship.

The issuance of a weapons carry license takes up a great deal of time at probate court as this requires adherence to strict federal as well as state laws. 1181 applicants applied for a weapons permit in 2016. An applicant must be 21 years of age or older unless active duty military.

Active duty military may be between the ages of 18 and 21 and must present a military ID, a certificate that shows basic training completed and a copy of orders showing applicant is stationed at Ft. Stewart.

Probate court in Liberty County is very much involved in mental health and addictive diseases (substance abuse) as this is an issue in every county in the USA. Judge Aspinwall is a true advocate of reforming the broken

Happy Anniversary!

Women should begin annual breast cancer screenings at age

We wish to recognize our employees and elected officials who celebrate a service anniversary this month.

40. Mammography has been proven to save lives by

catching breast cancer early. The St. Joseph's/Candler Mobile Mammography Unit is partnering with The Liberty County Board of Commissioners to offer free mammogram screenings at the upcoming employee health fair in January.

The Screen Machine will be in Liberty County on Wednesday, January 11th during the health fair session at the Justice Center. Eligible employees and retirees can schedule an appointment by calling (912) 819-6140.

St. Joseph's/Candler mobile mammography service provides private, confidential breast cancer screenings on The Screen Machine, their state-of-the-art mobile screening unit.

Having a mammogram on The Screen Machine is safe, convenient and offers the same level of care provided at the Telfair Pavilion's Comprehensive Breast Center.

All mammograms are performed by experienced and caring technologists specifically trained to work in the field of mammography.

"The best protection is early detection."
