Leicestershire County Council : Help spread the word about composting

Known as master composters, it is hoped their skills and enthusiasm will help to raise awareness of the benefits of home composting.

Those benefits include helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the amount of organic waste sent to landfill. Composting can also save money and improve soil fertility.

The master composters also encourage more people to compost at home.

​The initiative is run by the county council's waste management team in conjunction with the Leicestershire Waste Partnership and charity Garden Organic.

We know Leicestershire residents want to do their bit for the environment and volunteering as a master composter also has huge benefits in bringing together the community

There are currently 45 master composters across the county and the scheme is open to residents of Leicestershire (excluding Leicester city) and volunteers must be over 18.

Free training is provided, and the next training session will take place on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 March, at Ryton Organic Gardens, Coventry.

Suella Postles, of Shepshed, is already a master composter and said: 'The educational aspects of being a master composter have really enhanced my gardening ability. It also means I'm making a contribution to keeping unnecessary food and other garden waste out of landfill.'
