Extension of an Energy Services Performance Contract enables the university to move forward with implementation plan

Waterloo, ON - (Jan. 19, 2018) - Wilfrid Laurier University (Laurier) is partnering with Johnson Controls to implement an industry leading comprehensive microgrid, positioning the university at the forefront of energy management in the higher education sector. The implementation of the microgrid follows two phases of successful performance infrastructure projects made possible through an Energy Services Performance Contract (ESPC) with Johnson Controls that is part of the Laurier Energy Efficiency Program (LEEP).

Through the two initial phases of the LEEP, a series of Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) were implemented in order to expand energy conservation and reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions at Laurier's Waterloo, Brantford and Kitchener campuses. The ECMs were implemented across 38 buildings and included LED lights, solar walls, real-time metering, low flow water fixtures, occupancy sensors and retro-commissioning. The university is now entering the final phase of the project with Johnson Controls which is projected to generate up to three million dollars in total annual savings.

'We are committed to building a more sustainable future, setting an example for our students by implementing industry-leading energy conservation and management measures,' said Ulrike Gross, assistant vice president of Facilities and Asset Management at Laurier.

'We are proud to help Laurier in reaching such an admirable achievement in sustainability.' -- Brian Del Vecchio, senior account executive, Building Technologies & Solutions at Johnson Controls

The first half of Phase three, which involves the installation of solar PVs on six buildings across the Waterloo and Brantford campuses, is currently moving ahead. With the completion of Phase three the university will generate, store, control and distribute power on-site. As one of the first universities with a comprehensive microgrid, Laurier will be able to control the amount of energy being used across its campuses to help meet its sustainability goals.

'We are proud to help Laurier in reaching such an admirable achievement in sustainability,' said Brian Del Vecchio, senior account executive, Building Technologies & Solutions at Johnson Controls. 'Laurier is pioneering a new standard for other universities to follow. Its commitment to the environment is inspiring for us as well as its students, faculty and staff.'
