Queensland Defies National Home Building Trend

7 January 2016

Home building approvals in Queensland increased strongly in November defying a national slide in approvals according to Housing Industry Association based on ABS data released today.

Warwick Temby HIA's Queensland Executive Director said "home building approvals increased by more than 9% in November in Queensland while the national figure fell by over 12% (in seasonally adjusted terms).

"There has been steady growth in home building in Queensland during 2015, particularly in the South East.

"There has also been a trend away from the very strong multi-unit sector towards building of detached homes in the latter months of 2015.

"HIA's forecasts predict that this trend back to detached homes will continue into 2016.

"The relative strength of the Queensland home building market reflects the considerable affordability advantage that Queensland now enjoys over the southern states.

"The home building industry in Queensland can look forward to about $10 billion worth of work in 2016 and starting construction of around 42,000 new homes" Mr Temby concluded.
