German trade union Verdi called on public transport workers to strike on Friday, following failed negotiations to improve their working conditions.

Strikes were called in all federal states except Bavaria, the union said on Monday.

Verdi is part of the negotiations for new collective agreements that are simultaneously taking place in different federal states, affecting some 90,000 public transport employees of more than 130 local companies, it said.

After the first round of talks, no solution has been reached, the union said.

There is a shortage of workers, which leads to train cancellations and puts pressure on employees, it said, adding that some of the items discussed in the bargaining round were the reduction of weekly hours, extra vacation time and limited split shifts.

In some states, wage negotiations are also underway, it said, noting that the next round of talks will be different for each state involved.
