GRDC Grains Research and Development : Tools for growers - Corowa presents latest research

Maurie Street is well-known to growers and researchers in NSW, both as a former commercial agronomist in Central West NSW and now a researcher with the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) funded grower solution group Grain Orana Alliance (GOA).

While he has devoted considerable time to explaining herbicide resistance to growers and implementing best practice in his own cropping operation, Mr Street said research was the keystone underpinning all his work.

'I use as many tools as I can to proactively combat herbicide resistant ryegrass on my property, and proactively manage harvest time to secure positive outcomes, but growers need to be aware of these tools to be able to use them,' he said.

'For growers in the north, facing fresh challenges to farm productivity and profitability each year, I strongly urge them to keep abreast of the latest research and development 'answers' by participating in the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) 2016 Grains Research Updates.

'I will be at GRDC's one day Update at Corowa to discuss some of the latest research on canola harvest management, looking at improving decision making and minimising losses, including desiccation trial results, delayed harvesting, a new pod guard and cultivar performance.'

Mr Street's address is one of many scheduled for the Corowa update, which offers growers and advisors a unique opportunity to interact with leading industry professionals and learn how GRDC-funded research programs are helping tackle some of the north's most pressing production challenges.

GRDC manager grower services, north Sharon O'Keeffe said the GRDC Updates were effectively a three-way conversation between northern growers, advisors and researchers.

'Growers and advisors gain an insight into the scope, progress and results of some of the GRDC's major research investments while for research partners, the Updates provide an invaluable touch-point with industry which ensures the research work remains practical, meaningful and well-targeted.'

The programs will also incorporate presentations on cultivar response to time of sowing, micronutrients fact from fiction, herbicide resistance research update, online farm trials, Riverine Plains research in progress updates and controlled traffic farming.

The Update will be held at Corowa on February 18.
